BROOKLYN, NY - There was no shortage of five-star talent at the Brooklyn EYBL session as coaches flocked to the first of two open evaluation periods. The first day was filled with dominating performances by five-stars in the 2017 and 2018 class. One player that brought a lot of attention the court in both games he played was five-star power forward Marvin Bagley. The five-star power forward finished with 21 points and 7 rebounds against Billy Preston and RM5 and contributed 11 points and 8 rebounds in a two-point loss to Alabama Challenge.

BAGLEY MAKES HIS RETURN

The No. 1 player from the 2018 class hasn’t played an organized game since December after transferring to Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA) and he was excited to back on the floor.

“It went real well out there today. It feels great to get back on the court and especially playing at the U17 level against tougher competition. To come off the hardest time in my life where I had to sit on the bench and watch my teammates play, it was just a great learning experience and I never want to take this game for granted.”

There were plenty of coaches on hand to watch Bagley play his first two games back in action. Roy Williams (North Carolina) and Duke assistants Nate James and Jeff Capel were present for the morning and afternoon games on Friday. Also making time to watch Bagley play were Sean Miller (Arizona), Tom Izzo (Michigan State) and John Calipari (Kentucky).

The main asset to Bagley’s game is his play making ability inside and outside the post. He continues to improve his ball-handling and is gaining more confidence in the high post. Opponents know he’s dangerous on the block, so he’s working on making his face-up game stronger.

“I just want to work on my all-around game. I can’t just focus on one thing because there are many areas I want to improve. I want to get to a point where it’s automatic and I don’t have to think when I catch the ball.”

EARLY RECRUITMENT NEWS

On the recruiting front he’s taking each step in strides. “I still have two years of high school left so I’m trying to enjoy that. I see the coaches out there but I’m trying not to think about the process yet.”

Bagley has visited both Duke and UCLA recently. When talking about both programs, he says he likes the history of each school and the talent that has come from both teams.

There’s been a lot of questions on Bagley’s high school eligibility next season but as of now, he will be eligible at the start of the next season and fully intends to stay at Sierra Canyon High School.
